Dagmar Elizabeth Mecca grew up in the homes of a grandmother and mother who made clothes for the entire family. Looms, sewing machines, knitting tools, fabrics and hand spun and dyed yarns were part of the everyday life and environment. Born in Denmark, at age nineteen she moved to Florence to study art and drawing. While in Italy it was the excellent skills and historic traditions of the Florentine crafts, le botteghe d’Arte, that really sparked her interest. She started as an apprentice at the Atelier Lorena Albisani and learned tailoring and millinery. She graduated with a degree of maximum grade points from the art school, Accademia di Belle Art di Firenze, in Scenography, with a thesis in Anatomy and Corsets. Since graduating she has been working in Italy, and recently in Berlin, as a costume designer and costume maker for theatre, opera, films and art works, as well as designing her own work for fashion stores and private costumers. The skills of designing, draping, pattern construction and sewing costumes and clothes has also become a passion to share while teaching courses and workshops.
